WRAP funding

WRAP have issued a Press Alert today, to bring news of their funding cut.

“WRAP yesterday received confirmation that its core funding from one of its four funders, Defra, for 2011/12, will be £34.7 million, compared with £48.1 million in 2010/11

You may view the full text of this press release at a reduction of £13.4 million (28%). http://www.wrap.org.uk/go.rm?id=36538

With some additional funding from other sources, that remains one hell of a lot of money for WRPA. No doubt they think they deserve every penny, and more.

On their web pages they headline the added value that they deliver to UK waste management, though hard evidence of specific initiatives and achievements are hard to find.

Despite this there is clearly a role for WRAP, to oil the wheels of waste management and recycling that can deliver considerable benefit. Perhaps there are opportunities for those involved in clinical waste management, to develop and implement materials recovery processes – for metals, plastics, and for bio-degradables etc from sanitary/offensive wastes? This seems to be a potentially valuable funding and development opportunity that has largely been missed.
