When you have to go…..

When you have to go, finding a public toilet can be a problem. There might be some signage but if not pop into a department store or railway station.

But for IV drug users, public toilets are a refuge where, in privacy, they can shoot up. That leaves a needle and syringe, which might be taken back to an exchange centre, though being in possession of a needle and syringe can be sufficient reason for arrest so perhaps the gear will simply be dropped onto the floor, or into the toiler bowl, hidden in the cistern etc.  That creates additions safety issues so might be prevented if a secure sharps bin was provided.

So now, how to find a public toilet when you need one, AND one that has a sharps bin installed?

In Australia, just go on-line. Each accessible toilet is marked on a search able map which includes search options for, among other things like baby changing facilities and showers, a filter for those having a sharps bin.

An excellent tool from the Department of Social Services of the Government of Australia and the National Continence Program. An invaluable public health tool, and good too if you just need a pee!

Great stuff
