Free Seminar “Prevention of Sharps Injuries in Healthcare”

H&SA (Health and Safety Authority) Ireland are hosting a free seminar on Prevention of Sharps Injuries in Healthcare. The event is taking place on 26th November, 10am to 1pm and the venue is Ashling Hotel, Parkgate Street, Dublin 8.

The closing date for registration is 21st November (this coming Friday). More information can be found by following this link: http://www.hsa.ie/eng/News_Events_Media/Events/sharps_seminar_2014.pdf

Predictably, the program suggests that the focus and topics to be discussed relate almost exclusively to the selection and use of medical sharps and not to their disposal, at least not beyond the users’ placement of used sharps into a suitable sharps bin.

As we know, there is much more of great concern beyond that point, and in the management of sharps waste in the community where the high rate of bloodborne virus disease in IV drug users makes the risks significantly greater.  However, this short conference is an important contribution to sharps safety and we at the Clinical Waste Discussion Forum wish them well.
