Viridor are looking for a new Health & Safety Advisor to work alongside our existing Advisors, to provide practical advice, guidance and support on all aspects of health and safety within these facilities across the region, in addition to assisting with the development and implementation of effective health and safety systems.

The busy Northern operations area incorporates a workforce of around 1300 people across sites in Manchester and the wider North West Region, Sheffield and the East, which includes Materials Recycling Facilities, Waste Transfer Stations, Waste Collection Depots, Household Waste Recycling Centres, Power Generation sites, Landfills and Offices.

This crucial role enables regional operational teams to comply as a minimum with their statutory duties and Company Policy, in addition to promoting best practice and a positive health and safety culture.

Viridor are looking for a good level of working knowledge, understanding and application of current H&S legislation, preferably from within an industrial environment, together with practical experience of working as a health and safety practitioner (though waste sector experience not is essential).

The ideal candidate will hold a NEBOSH Diploma or NVQ Level 4 Occupational Health & Safety Practice or equivalent and a Chartered Safety & Health Practitioner Status (CMIOSH).

The role demands accuracy, diligence and would suit a resilient and self-motivated individual. A Full Driving Licence is essential, as the role involves frequent travel to our sites within the Northern region, including overnight stays.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing practical support and advice to Line Managers, Supervisors and employees to assess risks and comply with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act and other subordinate legislation.
  • Conducting site visits, health and safety inspections and audits, report writing and reviewing progress of corrective actions.
  • Assisting with investigations in connection with accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences and litigation claims and complete all necessary reports.
  • Liaising with Representatives for Employee Safety (RES) on matters relating to the health, safety and welfare of employees.
  • Assist in the collation of relevant Health and Safety data and statistics and compile reports and other management information in a timely and accurate manner.

Skills / Experience:

  • Display good working knowledge, understanding and application of current H&S legislation.
  • A NEBOSH Diploma or NVQ Level 4 Occupational Health & Safety Practice or equivalent.
  • Hold Chartered Safety & Health Practitioner Status (CMIOSH)
  • Experience of working as a health and safety practitioner (though it is not essential to have worked within the Waste sector).
  • Experience in an engineering, processing, heavy plant, construction or similar discipline.
  • Experience of multi-site, regional structures where decision making is fast and de-centralised.
  • A Full Driving Licence is essential to the role
