US shutdown affects clinical waste collections

The US political machinations that have led to a nationwide financial shutdown bring to a halt a great many federal and federally-funded services.

Apparently, this includes funding provision for many clinical waste collections from public hospitals, clinics, needle exchange schemes and the like. Along with so many other federal services, this should be no great surprise, but how much will the clear-up cost?
