Antivirus security – an additional healthcare waste hazard?

no-entry-dangerVisitors to the Clinical Waste Discussion Forum are welcome to use the information and downloads offered here as they wish, subject to the few rules that we explain here.

Visitors may also choose to follow links that we show, to other sites, but this is at your own risk as we obviously have no control over any third-party site. Some links are broken as other sites more or change or remove pages and web content and we check these and correct or remove them on an on-going basis.

But visitors may also try Google and other search systems, particularly when looking for a more substantive ready-made document such as a waste audit pro-forma or healthcare waste manual, neither of which you will find here.

But Google does offer such links, and we checked out one of those today. It is repeated below, with the link changed for obvious reasons.

Health Care Waste Manual.pdf – YCP – Free forum
Health Care Waste Manual.pdf > http://tinyurl.com/XXXXXXX (Copy and paste the link
into your browser if link is not clickable) Related Tags: AIX.. Version 7.1.

If you were to follow the link, you would arrive at a site that is apparently the YCP [Young Communist Party] website but which is obviously compromised and probably fake. Click the download link and an executable file will be downloaded instead of the promised PDF file. That file contains a dangerous root kit and possibly other nefarious virus signatures.

Another healthcare waste hazard?

Don’t go there.

And, as an aside, it may be of interest to update the statistics of our own  Clinical Waste Discussion Forum spam prevention initiatives.

In the first 24 hours of operation, the new anti-spamming system reported 654 blocked spam attacks. Implemented on 18 May, we are now exactly one month in, and to date the software management panel reports 26,786 spam attacks prevented!

It’s a dangerous web out there.

  1. More dangerous web sites found, offering free download of “Infecton Control And Hospital Waste Management.pdf” – they can’t even section infection properly!

But try these downloads and you will find yourself with a self-run executable file that will damage your computer. I will not provide either URL, since the warning for some may be seen as an opportunity to try and get something ‘for free’ and ultimately pay the penalty.

Be careful out there, the web is a wild place

  2. This gets worse – a new invitation to download a “detailed and richly illustrated medical waste manual” comprising a PDF file of over 240 pages sounds tempting indeed.

Click to download the PDF and it turns out to be an executable file that is likely to do all sorts of damage. And as if to add insult to injury, the site expects an initial “free credit card validation”!

    Don’t go there
