Boy pierced by ‘syringe tip’ after playing with it at beach

A 12-year-old boy was pierced by a syringe tip at Cowell Beach, Santa Cruz, on Sunday afternoon after he and another boy were playing with it

The boy’s father took him to Dominican Hospital, where he was given antiviral treatment and released Sunday night, authorities said.

The boys found the needle tip with a plastic guard on it near Collins Cove on the west side of the beach. They threw it back and forth and the 12-year-old was poked on his index finger with the needle tip.

It was not clear if it drew blood. The boys and their father talked to lifeguards about 5 pm. The boy declined medical attention at the beach and was given a sharps container for the needle.
