Sharps Terminator

They seem to have been around for years now, sharps destruction devices that snip, snap or burn off the metal sharp from plastic needle hub to provide alternate sharps disposal at the point of use.

Some devices leave a rough edge that is less hazardous than the original needle but nonetheless may break skin surfaces. Others can effectively destroy a needle, but not the barrel of the syringe that might be salvaged for reuse.

Low tech, low cost and effective, though not completely effective, these desktop devices can provide a solution for rural or occasional waste generators, or those in resource poor regions. Despite that, they never really caught on.

Now the manufacturers of the Sharps Terminator are to manufacture in Serbia, perhaps with an eye on developing markets that might include GPO surgeries, community nurses and the like. Sadly, the device may not find its place in developing countries as this one is electrically operated, using rechargeable batteries, rather than a simple mechanical device.
