‘Syringe pens’ crop up again

It is now some years ago that the Clinical Waste Discussion Forum raised concerns about syringe pens that are promoted as toys for kids, novelties for nurses, even promotional gifts for distribution by waste management companies. Our first mention goes right back to Q3 2006 when a note appeared in volume 3 of the Clinical Waste Discussion Forum Newsletter, so this is by no means a new matter. And indeed it has cropped up again, this time in Australia.

Syringe PenThe Burger Urge shop at New Farm was embroiled in controversy last month over its campaign, which was to see 20,000 pens resembling blood-filled syringes distributed to letterboxes in the area to promote a new menu. The Brisbane burger joint has defended its decision to distribute 20,000 pens resembling blood-filled syringes to promote a new menu, despite strong objections from the neighbours.

Rod Kelly , the general manager of the 139 Club that runs a nearby drop-in shelter, said Burger Urge’s campaign was “completely irresponsible”. Fortunately, the campaign has been consigned to the sharps bin!

What goes around, comes around.

Remember though, you heard about it here first!
