Adrenaline pens carried by those who are prone to potentially devastating anaphylactic (allergic) reactions are becoming increasingly common. Several incidents have been reported, of carelessly discarded or lost pens, and of sharps incidents from used pens.
Of course, in the heat of a medical emergency it might be likely, but remains unacceptable, that a used pen is discarded without care while attempting the resuscitation of a patient.
At least one manufacturer is addressing this potential problem and has developed a safety epinephrine injection device (adrenalin pen). Refreshingly, the value has been tested formally and published at:
