Emu suffers needlestick injury

A month after first being reported, an injured emu at the Bathurst tip has been captured and had a hypodermic needle removed from its foot.

The rescue has raised concerns that exclusion fencing around the tip has not been maintained, placing animals and rescuers at risk.

“The needle had snapped from the syringe and had worked its way right up through the foot itself.”

The lack of satisfactory exclusion fencing around this Australian tip has posed a serious threat to wildlife. That is a great shame, but I suspect that questions also need to be asked about the reasons that a syringe and needle were on the surface of this or any tip.
