The Center of Waste Management, Abu Dhabi, has announced the official opening of four facilities in Al Ain, including:

  • Clinical Waste Incinerator
  • Fallen Stock Incinerator
  • Sanitary Landfill
  • Crushing Plant Facility

These are located in and around Al Ain city, the second largest city in Abu Dhabi and known also as the Garden City because of its lush greenery.

The clinical waste incinerator will receive wastes from all hospital and clinics, both private and public, in Al Ain and its regions,
through the contractor Star International. These health care facilitates numbering approximately 150 hospitals and clinics
generate approximately 5 tonnes of hazardous medical wastes per day. Wastes are transported in refrigerated transport vehicles to the incinerator plant situated almost 35 km from the town center in special containers that are supplied to the hospitals.

At the plant all wastes are incinerated in 2 lines of 250 kg/hr capacity, at temperatures ranging in excess of 850-1150C. The  bottom ash is sent to the sanitary landfill and the hazardous fly ash waste to a suitable hazardous waste cell. Flue gas emissions are purified and cleaned in accordance with international standards and laws followed in the UAE.

This is a new development, and is clearly planned with great care to place complimentary waste facilities in close proximity to each other, in what might be termed a waste or environmental zone?
