An interesting analysis of the benefits of chewing gum after large bowel surgery. Apparently, the evidence is strong that gum chewing stimulates saliva production and returns gut function to normal more rapidly than conventional post-operative measures.

I wonder what will happen with regard to gum disposal? Stick it to the bed rail? On behind the headboard? Or into a waste container? And if it is prescribed, then the full weight of the legal framework will come to bear.
Maybe the headboard would be the easiest option!
