"AN OUTSTANDING contract with a private hospital waste disposal company was yesterday extended for another year in an emergency meeting which was called after the Health Ministry was exposed for failing to do so.

"The company, whose contract ended on June 30, stopped collected hospital waste at the end of July. The story was made public in the local press, prompting Health Minister Christos Patsallides to call a meeting yesterday afternoon. The meeting was attended by a company representative and the head of the tenders department.

"By yesterday hundreds of yellow plastic bags containing clinical waste including body parts had started piling up at government hospitals, posing a threat to public health following the Health Ministry’s failure to renew the contract with the private company that collected and destroyed the waste.
