The Health Protection Agency (HPA) reports on a study published in the BMJ that highlights the need for people to be aware of the possible health risks associated with body piercing. Although there have been no reported cases of contracting a blood borne virus, such as Hepatitis B and C or HIV, through body piercing in the UK, this has been seen in other parts of the world and the study authors report that this remains a cause for concern.
As with clinical wastes from tattooists, there should be no doubt about the classification of wastes from body piercers and similar premises, and the care needed to guard against infection when handling these.
