"A NURSE who didn’t wash her hands after dealing with excrement and gave patients wrong medicine has been barred from the profession.

"Hilary Hold was trusted to look after physically disabled adults and people with learning disabilities at the Eithinog Leonard Cheshire residential care home in Colwyn Bay, Conwy.

One of the charges that resulted in striking off was "failing to change her apron after disposing of clinical waste".

I suppose that it is the nature of the disciplinary process that extra charges are brought, sometimes rather trivial ones, to make sure that the disciplinary and dismissal process is successful. However, if there is a significant hygiene failure in not removing a (presumably disposable) apron after handling clinical wastes then half of the profession would be at fault.

Perhaps the issue here is one of not using a clean apron for the next task. That would be more serious.

I cannot help wonder if using these waste handling issues as makeweights in disciplinary processes slightly misses the point and suggests that the architect of the charges actually fails to understand the issues involved. That helps nobody.

C'est la vie!
