In preparation for upcoming legislation banning the disposal of needles in municipal waste, the Lynn Board of Health announced the availability of one of the first MDPH Sharps Container Disposal sites in Massachusetts.
The specially designed needle disposal kiosk was given to the city of Lynn by the State Department of Public Health and is located in the Health Department Clinic in City Hall, on the first floor in room 103.
Loose needles are not accepted, but must be disposed of in a personal sharps container, two quart or smaller.
Also accepted is a puncture resistant container such as a one-gallon bleach bottle or a one-pound sealed, taped coffee can.
The kiosk does not accept glass containers, paper, or plastic bags or containers larger than a one-gallon bottle.

Interesting that it is prohibited to put needles in glass bottles.
In a recent audit of UK Local Authority advice to the public in the event of finding discarded needles in the community, this issue in particular was in a real mess. Some advise placing needles in a drinks can, but others said no because needles may fall out or penetrate the thin can walls.
Some prohibited glass containers, while others recommended these.
What a mess.
