Clinical waste from Bristol brothel

A woman has been accused of banking more than £800,000 from running brothels in Clifton and Bedminster.

An alleged madam banked more than £800,000 from two brothels in Clifton and Bedminster, a court heard.

Julie Gatty and ex-partner Philip Stubbs are alleged to have helped run a premises called Panache in Highland Crescent as well as From China With Love in North Street.

Bristol Crown Court was told that Gatty claimed Panache was a legitimate massage parlour and she was a receptionist. But a police investigation which included undercover surveillance found she banked £818,717 between 2005 and 2012.

Stubbs, who claimed to be a maintenance man, set up a CCTV system at Panache, from which police recovered footage showing him receiving envelopes from girls, said to be takings from sexual services.

The jury was told a 2005 health and safety assessment of the Panache premises – which pre-dated the couple’s arrival – was found at their home and referred to “condoms, sponges and tampons” as clinical waste.

Brendon Moorhouse, prosecuting, said it was not an offence to be a prostitute. But he said it was an offence to run or assist in the running of brothels.

He said: “People were going to these two premises and paying for sex there. Two or more women were working there, offering sex.”

Mr Moorhouse said assistance in the management of a brothel could involve being a receptionist, providing security, banking proceeds, advertising services on offer, transporting sex workers or buying wet wipes and condoms.

He said the Panache premises was let out to Gatty in July 2007 and soon afterwards she and Stubbs set about creating a brothel.

There was evidence Gatty set up a bank account to pay utility bills at Panache, which she described to police as a massage parlour.

Good to know that they had a responsible attitude to waste categorisation, safety and prevention of transmission of sexually transmitted infection.

But who was servicing their clinical waste contract?
