Luton park needle finds

A mother is horrified about drugs paraphernalia she found left in parks and open spaces in Luton where she takes her two-year-old son to play. Vikki Hardy, 28, discovered litter including used needles, medical wrappers, candles and alcohol wipes, in the privately owned Bramingham Woods and Limbury Park within the space of a week.

A Luton Borough Council spokesperson said: “As part of their daily duties, all parks employees clean up any waste material irresponsibly left behind by visitors. Anyone spotting drugs activity taking place should report it to the police.”

The council offers a “speedy clean-up response” to anyone reporting such material.

Blenkharn Environmental had confirmed this in the Clinical Waste audit of Local Authorities, where is was noted that Luton’s Dawn Patrol will visit known hotspots and respond to reports to deal with this type of problem. They cannot reasonably do more.

  1. In America, it is claimed that everything is bigger and better. And so it is with discarded needles!

A Kentucky man faces wanton endangerment charges having buried a used needle in the sand at the Fords Woods Park in Middlesboro. Police say the needle had been used to consume illegal drugs.

The officer wrote in the arrest citation he watched the man bury the needle in the sand at the jungle gym where children play. The officer also wrote “he showed no concern.”

Officers say they dug up the needle and removed it.

    How bad can it get?

  2. What is it, about schools and parks that attracts people who inject drugs and discard their needles?

In Buffalo, NY, a 4-year-old girl accidently stuck her finger with a hypodermic needle after being dropped off at daycare.

Kameron attends Lil’ Worker’s Child Development Daycare on Oak Street in Buffalo. Her class was practicing a fire drill Tuesday and Kimberly says the teachers weren’t keeping a close enough eye on the little girl.

“She was playing in the dirt and got stuck with a hypodermic needle,” Kimberly said.

In a report from the school, it says the needle was stuck in the 4-year-old’s finger. Kameron was taken to the hospital. While she’s doing okay, Kimberly is worried about the “what-ifs,” like the possibility Kameron has contracted a blood-borne illness like HIV.
