It’s probably inevitable, and in some instances visually apparent, that a significant proportion of police officers frequent the gym and abuse steroids.
Unlike the Chief Constable, I cannot be sure quite how they get their rocks off to ‘abuse their power for sexual gratification’ but we can leave that aside. However, the illicit use of steroids carries with it links to crime, disease transmission – Hepatitis C infection is on the risk among steroid users – through needle sharing, and disposal problems for high street gyms.
Many of the big name gyms now regularly, though discretely, manage needle finds in the male toilets, and some of the more responsible have sharps bins in their toilets for safe disposal. But that is a problem. The gyms don’t want to pay for disposal and as smalls the cost is disproportionately high, create additional concerns when competition is high and margins are small.
