Single-use disposable surgical instruments represent a major challenge. In the clinical waste stream, they might be lost to recycling unless source segregated or managed with post-processing separation techniques.
For ATT processes, shredders can jam causing serious damage but these items are a valuable material resource that must be separated. Some hospitals choose to reprocess these single-use items. Though there are intended only for one use cycle the manufacturing process delivers a high grade product that can be used several times. However, concerns about deterioration over time and the liability issues of reprocessing cause many to back off from such processes.
In developing and under-resourced countries, this equipment is invaluable. The need for usable surgical instruments far outweighs concerns about product liability, and many will accept this items at prices above scrap value. Elsewhere, the brave already reprocess such items, and where this happens the cost savings are considerable.
