Iraq is improving - or at least our politicians tell us - though in Afghanistan the situation apparently remains critical for all. Perhaps it is only a small issue that might not rank highly when compared to the terrible loss of life on all sides, but the military do tell us that their goal is to revitalise the country with a stable government and a safe and effective infrastructure.

To achieve this, the military services have built vast bases including hospital installations to treat the injured. Waste management for those operations is obviously important, and never more so for clinical wastes. This report suggests that the US military and others are breaching their own rules through the use of open burning pits for waste disposal.

At the root of these complaints are concerns regarding an apparent increase in serious ill-health among staff and contractors working at these bases who are exposed to the fumes from these fire pits 24 hours a day for months on end.
