The US medical disposables company Carmel Pharma has announced the introduces PhaSeal® Secondary IV Set. This is an addition to IV fluid administration (drip) sets that is intended mainly for the preparation for administration of cytotoxics. An airtight expansion chamber and leakproof double membrane connections prevent exposure to hazardous drugs, including aerosols and vapours, and make it the only system that meets the NIOSH and International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners (ISOPP) safety standard definition. Its streamlined design and universally-compatible components make the system easy to use from preparation and administration to waste disposal.

This is a great advance. Though the device still includes PVC in its manufacture, it is refreshing to see a company design into their products features that enhance safety and facilitate safe handling and disposal. Others should follow the lead.
