In a regional newspaper from the Manchester area, I note a report suggesting an arson attack at Wythenshaw Hospital that involved setting on fire sacks of clinical waste. The news report includes a particularly interesting comment, that "Clinical waste next to a bin had been set on fire, which caused substantial damage to the lift areas".

The handling of clinical wastes in UK hospitals is often far below an acceptable standard and HTM 07-01 has made little difference to this.

Read the results of earlier audit of waste management performance. Finding waste containers stored in walkways and by exit doors, in stairwells and obstructing corridors has been remarkably common. Perhaps it is time now to repeat the study, but don't expect to find much improvement!
