A terrible pong which spread through the corridors of Queen's Hospital on Tuesday forced visitors to leave because it was so bad.

Several people walked out complaining of the stench and covering their faces with tissues in an attempt to block it out. The receptionists in the hospital atrium and several nurses say "Oh no, not again" and complain the problem happened "on a regular basis". Nurses tried to keep as many doors closed as possible and sprayed air fresheners which were unsuccessful in disguising the smell.

Last April sewer problems at the hospital which then involved foul flooding as well as smells forced at least one ward to close. The blockage was later found to be caused by someone using one of the hospital's 600 loos as a clinical waste bin. A Trust spokesperson said: "There was an incident on Tuesday evening where a sluice had become blocked, leading to an unpleasant smell in a small area of the hospital.
