The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published guidance to help ensure operators of household waste and recycling centres receive and store hazardous waste materials safely. The guidance published last week (August 5), entitled ‘Storing hazardous waste at household waste and recycling centres', focuses on the health and safety implications of handling a wide range of hazardous materials - including gas cylinders, batteries, cathode ray tubes and aerosols. http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/waste12.pdf

It is no doubt valuable guidance, though might have included also guidance concerning the safety of staff involved in recycling and sorting of wastes. Far too often, these contain substantial amounts of clinical waste and sharps, and the risks of infection from these and other wastes is considerable.
